The Race Format

Great Naseby Water Race Course Map

Course Map

Naseby, New Zealand

The course is set around a 10km figure-eight loop - the one half along a gravel road and the other half on a forest track beside the Water Race that gives the event its name.

This unique ultramarathon event takes place near Naseby - the highest town in New Zealand at 2000ft above sea level. Naseby is 15km north-west by road from Ranfurly and 145km north-west (via Middlemarch) from Dunedin. The race is held on the last weekend of August each year.

Originally the Water Race was built for gold mining around 1860 and now it provides the water supply to the town of Naseby and a stunning backdrop for this intense race.

Loop Details

The Race starts in Wet Gully Road (1 km from Ranfurly/Naseby Road).

Competitors run 500m down this road before turning right into Hoffmans Dam Road.

Continue along Hoffmans Dam Road to Coalpit Dam, then around the Dam, and back up to the Water Race.

Follow the Water Race back to the start/finish line.

Continue along the Water Race, past the swimming dam, across the bridge, and up Forest Walk.

Turn left at the Stone Marker then right onto Translator Road.

Continue to Ramp Road, taking a left back onto Wet Gully Road, to complete lap 1.

Complete each figure-8 loop to finish your race:

      • 5 (five) loops = 50 km

      • 8 (eight) loops = 80 km

      • 10 (ten) loops = 100 km

      • 16 (sixteen) loops = 100 mile

      • 20(twenty) = 200 kms

      • 32 (thirty two) = 200 mile

Teams: Each runner completes 3 (three) continuous laps before swapping.

 Race Elevation

Take things to new heights. The Great Naseby Water Race is set in New Zealand’s highest town; 2000ft above sea level.

Running through the forests and hills of this Central Otago town with a little elevation to spice things up.
